What America Says It Wants vs What It Actually Buys: The 2026 Jersey Demand Gap

Published by: League Fan Gear Editorial Team | Category: National Teams | Read Time: 7 mins

Ask an American fan which national team jersey they want and you get a confident answer within two seconds. Ask the resale market what those same fans actually paid money for and you get a completely different list — one where the most-wanted shirt doesn't appear at all.

Two datasets collected weeks apart this summer tell the whole story. A July 2026 survey of 2,000 U.S. adults asked fans which national team shirt they'd most want to own. Separately, resale-platform transaction data covering 11 June to 1 July 2026 recorded which shirts actually changed hands. The first list is Argentina, Portugal and Norway. The second is Mexico, Mexico and Mexico.

What America Says It Wants

The survey side is simple and very star-driven. Fans were asked to pick the national team jerseys they'd most want to own, and the top three all came with a global superstar attached.

# National Team Star on the Back Share of Fans
1 Argentina Lionel Messi 52%
2 Portugal Cristiano Ronaldo 44%
3 Norway Erling Haaland 36%

July 2026 survey of 2,000 U.S. adults aged 25+, pick-three format. Notably, no American homegrown star — not Pulisic, not Balogun — made the top three.

Look at the pattern: every single entry is a national team plus its franchise player. Nobody is picking Norway because they studied the qualifying group. They're picking Haaland. Admiration is what drives the answer, and admiration is a feeling, not a purchase.

What America Actually Buys

Now the transaction side. These are completed sales on the resale market across a three-week window in June and July 2026 — real money, real shipping addresses, no hypotheticals.

# Shirt Category Units Sold
1 Mexico 26 home (player version) Match shirt 342
2 Mexico 26 third / away (player version) Match shirt 321
3 France pre-match shirt (designer collab) Collaboration 274
4 England x streetwear brand Collaboration 256
5 Mexico retro reissue Retro 188
6 Japan 26 away Match shirt 158
7 Mexico 26 third long-sleeve Match shirt 129
8 Netherlands collab drop Collaboration 123

Resale transaction volume, 11 June – 1 July 2026. Four of the top eight sellers are Mexico shirts. Argentina, Portugal and Norway appear nowhere in the top eight.

Four of the top eight are Mexico. The two best-selling shirts in America over that window were both El Tri. Meanwhile the three teams that topped the wish list combined for zero appearances.

The Gap: Three Reasons the Lists Don't Match

1. A superstar makes you want a shirt. Identity makes you buy one.

Every team on the wish list is attached to a player most fans will never see play in person. That's a poster, not a wardrobe. The shirts people actually paid for split into two very different buckets: identity (Mexican-American fans buying El Tri) and scarcity (limited collaboration drops). Both of those come with urgency. Admiration doesn't.

2. Mexico is the most underrated jersey market in the United States

Mexico didn't crack the survey top three at all — yet it took the number one and number two selling shirts and half of the entire top eight. That's what happens when a team plays a large share of its fixtures in Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas and Chicago, in front of the largest Hispanic-origin fanbase in the country. Polls with a general-population sample systematically undercount that demand. Sales data doesn't lie about it.

One more tell: the long-sleeve Mexico third moved 129 units. People aren't just collecting that shirt, they're wearing it — which is exactly the behaviour that never shows up in a survey.

3. Collaboration drops are now a category of their own

The France designer pre-match shirt (274) and the England streetwear collaboration (256) outsold almost every national team match shirt on the board. Fashion-led drops pull in buyers who don't follow the sport at all, and they create the one thing a normal kit can't: a deadline. If you're buying to wear, that's a trap. If you're buying to collect, that's the whole point.

What This Means When You Buy Your 2026 Jersey

Buy the shirt you'll wear, not the one with the biggest name

The data is blunt about this: the shirts that sell are the ones tied to who people are, not who they admire. If El Tri is your team, you already know it. If you're buying for a kid who wants "Messi" on the back, that's the right shirt too — just don't expect it to be the one the market rewards.

If you want the Argentina shirt, the window is now

Messi announced his retirement from the Argentina national team on 31 August 2026, closing out 207 caps and 125 goals. The 2026/27 three-star home shirt is the last Argentina home shirt of his international era, and retirement announcements are when demand for a player's final shirt spikes hardest.

Third kits and long sleeves are the smart sleeper picks

Mexico's third shirt sold 321 units versus 342 for the home — nearly level, which is unheard of for an alternate colourway. Alternate kits travel further than home shirts because they don't clash with anything else you own.

FAQ

Which national team jersey actually sells the most in the US?

Mexico. In the 11 June – 1 July 2026 resale window, the Mexico 26 home player version led all shirts with 342 units, and Mexico took four of the top eight slots overall.

Which jersey do American fans say they want most?

Argentina, at 52% in a July 2026 survey of 2,000 U.S. adults — followed by Portugal (44%) and Norway (36%). All three are teams led by a global superstar.

Why doesn't Argentina top the sales chart if it tops the wish list?

Wanting and buying are different behaviours. Survey answers track admiration; purchase data tracks identity and scarcity. It's also worth noting the sales window closed on 1 July, two months before Messi's retirement announcement reframed demand for Argentina shirts.

Are collaboration shirts worth buying?

Resale data says the market pays a premium for them — two collaboration drops finished in the top four. But collaborations are priced for collectors. If you want a shirt to wear every week, buy the team you actually support.

Methodology note: Wish-list figures come from a July 2026 survey of 2,000 U.S. adults aged 25+ using a pick-three format. Sales figures are resale-platform transaction volume for 11 June – 1 July 2026, covering a secondary market snapshot rather than total retail. The two datasets measure different things on purpose — that contrast is the point of this article.

Buy the shirt you'll actually wear — not the one the poll says you should want.
