Netherlands vs Germany: The Nations League Opener That Never Waits
No group-stage warm-ups in this competition. The 2026-27 UEFA Nations League league phase opens with Oranje hosting Deutschland — two of the game's great footballing cultures, two rebuilt squads, and a rivalry that has decided titles, semi-finals and too many classics to count. Netherlands vs Germany is matchday one, and it starts tonight.
The Story Going In
Germany enter the post-Kroos era with the youngest core they've fielded in a decade — Florian Wirtz runs the attack now, and Jamal Musiala finally looks settled beside him. The Netherlands have their own identity crisis to settle: a golden generation of defenders with question marks in front of them. Neither side can afford a slow start in a group that also contains Belgium's neighbours Serbia and Greece.
Head-to-head it's as tight as history gets: the Oranje lead the modern record narrowly, but Germany have won the fixtures that mattered most — including a Nations League thriller in Munich. Tonight writes the next chapter.
